Things Unseen

Artist's Statement —

Each of these pieces is my attempt to explore the "unseen world" - "unseen" either because we seldom take notice of what is around us, just under our feet, or slightly above our heads, or because it is quite literally hidden from our view.

"Deep Underneath" was the beginning the series for me: it evoked the strength and surprising delicacy of tree roots buried deep in the ground. I followed the tree roots up to the Forest Floor and up further again to those tenacious roots and trees that cling with such determination to the faces of bluffs and cliffs.

Water Droplets was an attempt to capture the mysterious worlds the live within a single drop of water. Following the water led me to explore a Tide Pool and to bring to life the myriad world of seashells, now so tiny they form the sand beneath our feet.

The last two pieces rely completely on an imaginative flight of fancy. Particle Physics attempts to render the world, not just of sub-atomic particles, but of the mysterious fields that surround them and bring existence into being. The final image, In the Country of Dreams, is a brief glimpse into the sometimes magical, sometimes terrifying, often confusing, but always mysterious world of dreams.
