Artist's Statement —

When I started the series, I planned to incorporate the thread in an abstract and subtle way. My idea for the second image (Lachesis) was to create a fabric texture and then to highlight some of the threads, but when I couldn't figure out an effective way to do that, I decided to make my own thread and weave it into the fabric. After I accomplished this, I realized I needed to go back and introduce the thread into the first image (Clotho).

Although I was pleased with the first and second images I was stumped by the third. I knew I wanted the thread to end somewhere in the middle of the image but I didn't know exactly how to "cut" it. While I pondered that dilemna I laid in the fabrics and flowers and worked on distorting and fading them into nothingness. Then I went back to the original Julia and, using Thin Orbit Traps, found that I could use some of the intersecting lines as scissors.

The significance of the star shape developed subconsciously. I put stars in the first image because they lent a bit of magic to the myth. I wasn't planning to use them in the second image, but when they appeared as star-shaped flowers, I realized that I was developing a motif. The star came to represent the human body -- a flat, cut-out shape before birth which becomes full-bodied and sensual in life and then is distorted and fades as it nears death.
